And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. Matthew 17:8 ESV. When waters surround us and our burdens fill every empty space to drown us, all we need to do is look up and see the sun shining through the clear blue water and follow the light to our salvation. It is very often that I find myself being consumed by negative thoughts, of all the things I have done wrong in my life, how nothing has gone the way I planned, thoughts of failure and pain. My face pressed into the mud, my vision clouded, despair overwhelming me. How can I come up out of the miry clay and walk a straight path? The answer so simple but so hard to comprehend in the vacuum of self-defeat. Psalm 40:2 ESV says "He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure." If we would fix our eyes on Jesus and not on our friends, family, material things, alcohol, drugs, or whatever it is that influences us, then we would become new creatures free from self- defeat. If God can forgive our sins and completely wash them away, what significance does a person who holds on to your faults have, including yourself? When you feel defeated or like a failure, when other people try to make you feel bad for what you've done, remember God thinks so much of you and the things you have done wrong bare little significance in the lives of those who love Him and wish to obey His plan.
In context to the scripture above, Matthew 17 speaks of the transfiguration, why were the disciples facing down to the ground? They were afraid. Fear caused them not to see what was truly in front of them, Jesus Christ. Our fears that keep us from seeing Jesus might be fear of failure, fear of self-destruction, fear of change, fear of the unknown, fear of inadequacy- so many I could name. What is keeping you from seeing the truth? What is your biggest fear that causes you to live in self-defeat and self-pity? What keeps your head down to the ground and causes you not to look to the Father?
God sees you as an amazing, incredible creature made in His image. We have self-doubt, we have fear, we make mistakes but Jesus paid the ultimate price and all our faults are covered by His blood. Begin to see yourself the way God sees you. Keep your eyes toward Heaven. Nothing can sway you when you set your sight on Him. I will end this entry with one of my favorite scriptures is Psalm 121 ESV:
I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot be moved; he who keeps you will not slumber. Behold, he who keeps Israel will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord is your keeper; the Lord is your shade on your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all evil; he will keep your life. The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and forevermore.
